Elaine Tate – Director of Design, Black Carpenter

With an extensive background in art and education on the print side, Elaine Tate was Art Buyer Supervisor at Holt Rinehart & Winston/Harcourt in Austin, Texas from 1993 to 2006, one of the world’s leading text book publishing companies.

In her role at Holt Rinehart &Winston/Harcourt, she developed art programs and commissioned art for all disciplines, including science, social studies, language arts, math, world language 9-12, some of which won awards at the prestigious New York Book Show. Elaine Tate also development of systems and guidelines for Art/Photo procurement; directed in-house and out-of-house art buyers, with a specialty in art & map programs and writing art & map specs.

Elaine Tate holds a Bachelor of Fine Art  from University of Georgia in Graphic Design, where she interned in the design department of the University of Georgia Press.

Directly out of college, Elaine Tate apprenticed in the W. Thomas Taylor, Inc. commercial letterpress shop where she gained an appreciation of logo and letter branding. This in-depth knowledge of scale and letter craftsmanship is directly visible in the Black Carpenter logo, which Elaine Tate created. The carpenter’s triangle with the motto “Measure Up” creates a strong visual impact and brings a “super hero” feel to the Black Carpenter empowerment brand, which quickly resonates with today’s youth.
